SUMMARY:Wonderful World of Insects: Why Insects Matter
DESCRIPTION:Why do insects matter? Because they rule the world! These marvels of evolution were the first in flight and dominated the skies for millions of years. Insects appear in a staggering array of shapes and sizes and life spans. Insects were first to engage in manufacturing\, animal husbandry and farming. Byproducts of insects’ lives have been exploited by humans since pre-civilization.\nKate Borduas is a self-described “Adult-onset” Naturalist. A native of coastal Maine\, she spent a number of years in Florida where she trained as a Florida Master Naturalist and as a nationally Certified Interpretive Guide. \nFollowing a life-long\, long-distance love affair with nature\, Kate was delighted to live the life of a naturalist full time while in Florida. She gave frequent walks and talks in Charlotte and Sarasota Counties with a specific focus on Scrub Habitat and the Endangered Florida Scrub Jay. As a naturalist and guide\, Kate is committed to sharing with others the hidden wonders of nature all around us. \nKate was the recipient of Sarasota County Parks “Volunteer of the Year” award in 2018. \nKate is now happily returned to Maine full time where her interests in native plants\, insects and birds keep her very busy. \nRegister Here: https://scarboroughlibrary.libcal.com/event/17206647 \nIn partnership with Scarborough Public Library and Sustaining Scarborough\n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Women's Walk
DESCRIPTION:Come meet up with fellow women who enjoy the outdoors and have a desire to walk the wonderful open spaces Scarborough Land Trust has committed to preserving. Women are twice as likely as men to feel uncomfortable walking alone\, so we created this monthly program to foster a fun and supportive community for women to walk together and get to know our preserves. \nThese walks average 60-90 mins in length with a leisurely pace as we observe the landscape and wildlife (migrating birds\, wildflowers\, etc). Bring binoculars or a camera if you are so inclined. Much of the terrain will be flat (either dirt or grass surfaces) but expect that there will brief uphill stretches\, wood crossings for boggy areas\, and some uneven ground (rocks\, tree roots). Trails could be wet with dew or muddy if there have been recent rains\, although we will postpone or reschedule if inclement weather is forecasted during the event itself. As always\, we recommend wearing long pants\, comfortable footwear\, and sunscreen as appropriate. \nParking can be limited on good weather weekends\, so if you are bringing a companion\, please carpool. \nAlthough most SLT properties are dog friendly\, we ask that you not bring dogs to this event. \nSLT rarely cancels programs but occasionally we must\, especially in bad weather. Please check our website before heading out to a program to ensure it is still being held.

SUMMARY:Wonderful World of Insects: Insect Armageddon
DESCRIPTION:Insects are suffering population losses so vast that it has been called “Insect Armageddon.” Also “The Death of a Thousand Cuts.” What is causing the damage to insect populations? Can insects adapt to climate change? And can losses be reversed? What will the loss of insects mean for the health of the planet? \nKate Borduas is a self-described “Adult-onset” Naturalist. SUMMARY:Autumn Magic in the Maine Woods
DESCRIPTION:Join Maine Master Naturalist Christie Constantine for a guided walk exploring how our forests transform in autumn. Shorter days and cooler temperatures trigger a burst of color as trees shut down chlorophyll production and prepare for dormancy. Wildlife\, too\, is busy getting ready – whether storing food\, building fat reserves\, or seeking the perfect winter den. \nWe’ll explore why leaves change color and the remarkable strategies trees\, birds\, mammals\, amphibians\, and insects use to survive the colder months ahead. From migrating birds and food-hoarding squirrels to hibernating mammals and freeze-tolerant frogs\, this walk reveals the subtle and fascinating signs of seasonal preparation unfolding all around us. \nSLT rarely cancels programs but occasionally we must\, especially in bad weather. Please check our website before heading out to a program to ensure it is still being held. \n
