SUMMARY:Native Plant Backyard Garden Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Scarborough Land Trust and Kelly Pietrzak on a backyard garden tour focused on landscaping with native plants. If you are curious about how to start in your own yard\, come learn and see a yard in various stages of transformation. \nThis yard was specifically chosen to show ways native plants help attract pollinators\, support local wildlife and create beautiful landscapes. The yard contains a chemical and pesticide free lawn that does not require frequent mowing as well as sections that are encouraged to re-wild with gentle encouragement.  Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a newcomer to the world of native plants\, this tour promises to inspire and educate\, leaving you with ideas for bringing natives and nature back into your outdoor space. \nVolunteer Kelly Pietrzak is passionate about sustainability in everyday life\, gardening and landscaping. She is gradually introducing native plants into her family’s yard to create beautiful\, safe\, sustaining space for her family and all Maine’s creatures. \nSLT rarely cancels programs but occasionally we must\, especially in bad weather. Please check our website before heading out to a program to ensure it is still being held.

SUMMARY:Women's Walk
DESCRIPTION:Come meet up with fellow women who enjoy the outdoors and have a desire to walk the wonderful open spaces Scarborough Land Trust has committed to preserving. Women are twice as likely as men to feel uncomfortable walking alone\, so we created this monthly program to foster a fun and supportive community for women to walk together and get to know our preserves. \nThese walks average 60-90 mins in length with a leisurely pace as we observe the landscape and wildlife (migrating birds\, wildflowers\, etc). Bring binoculars or a camera if you are so inclined. Much of the terrain will be flat (either dirt or grass surfaces) but expect that there will brief uphill stretches\, wood crossings for boggy areas\, and some uneven ground (rocks\, tree roots). Trails could be wet with dew or muddy if there have been recent rains\, although we will postpone or reschedule if inclement weather is forecasted during the event itself. As always\, we recommend wearing long pants\, comfortable footwear\, and sunscreen as appropriate. \nParking can be limited on good weather weekends\, so if you are bringing a companion\, please carpool. \nAlthough most SLT properties are dog friendly\, we ask that you not bring dogs to this event.

SUMMARY:Uncover the Hidden Critters of Silver Brook
DESCRIPTION:Join Maine Master Naturalist Christie Constantine for a hands-on outdoor workshop exploring the fascinating world of aquatic insects and other macroinvertebrates living in Silver Brook. Using dip nets along the river’s edge\, we’ll collect tiny stream creatures and sort them into trays for close observation. \nTogether\, we’ll learn to identify what we find and explore how these small but mighty organisms form the foundation of the brook’s food web\, supporting fish\, birds\, amphibians\, and other wildlife. Because different macroinvertebrates have varying tolerance for pollution\, their presence – or absence – offers valuable clues about water quality and overall stream health. \n SLT rarely cancels programs but occasionally we must\, especially in bad weather. Please check our website before heading out to a program to ensure it is still being held. \n

SUMMARY:Wildflower Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join wildflower enthusiast Becky Warren Seel on a walk at Elaine Stimson Warren Woods Preserve. Becky has a deep connection to the property because of her family’s prior ownership and she is excited to share that connection with you by exploring the property\, showing you where different wildflowers can be found\, and sharing information about some of the flowers. Delight in the beautiful flowers such as the Grass Pink and Rose Pogonia orchids\, which are unique to Warren Woods and hopefully visible on this walk.  Come learn about these special plants and others that make Warren Woods their home. \n  \nPlease note that the land at Warren Woods tends to be wet and muddy\, especially after periods of heavy rain.  Participants are strongly encouraged to wear boots. \n SLT rarely cancels programs but occasionally we must\, especially in bad weather. SUMMARY:Explore the Nocturnal World of Fuller Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join Maine Master Naturalist Christie Constantine for a special evening in celebration of National Moth Week\, where we’ll explore the beauty\, diversity\, and ecological importance of moths. Using lights and white sheets\, we’ll attract\, observe\, and photograph a wide variety of moths and other nighttime insects. \nAlong the way\, participants will learn about the moth life cycle\, the vital role Maine’s 4\,000 moth species play in supporting songbirds\, mammals\, amphibians\, and other insects\, and their often overlooked work as “night-shift” pollinators\, visiting even more plant species than daytime pollinators like bees. We’ll also discuss simple\, meaningful actions to help reverse the declines facing moths and other insects. \nThis event is in celebration of National Moth Week\, one of hundreds of programs taking place across all 50 states and more than 90 countries\, contributing valuable observations that help scientists better understand and protect these remarkable insects. \nSLT rarely cancels programs but occasionally we must\, especially in bad weather. Please check our website before heading out to a program to ensure it is still being held.

SUMMARY:Autumn Magic in the Maine Woods
DESCRIPTION:Join Maine Master Naturalist Christie Constantine for a guided walk exploring how our forests transform in autumn. Shorter days and cooler temperatures trigger a burst of color as trees shut down chlorophyll production and prepare for dormancy. Wildlife\, too\, is busy getting ready – whether storing food\, building fat reserves\, or seeking the perfect winter den. \nWe’ll explore why leaves change color and the remarkable strategies trees\, birds\, mammals\, amphibians\, and insects use to survive the colder months ahead. From migrating birds and food-hoarding squirrels to hibernating mammals and freeze-tolerant frogs\, this walk reveals the subtle and fascinating signs of seasonal preparation unfolding all around us. \nSLT rarely cancels programs but occasionally we must\, especially in bad weather. Please check our website before heading out to a program to ensure it is still being held. \n
