SUMMARY:Youth Wildflower Walk
DESCRIPTION:Wildflowers come in all shapes\, sizes\, and colors. Learn how to identify them with Kelly Pietrzak! Kelly is a youth outdoor educator\, local parent\, and SLT volunteer. She will teach you where to find the usual and unusual flowers at Warren Woods Preserve.  \nPlease wear comfortable footwear for walking and bring bug spray. Bring water and a snack if you’d like! Long pants are recommended. If you have binoculars\, feel free to bring them along!   \nKelly loves to work with children: from coaching youth sports\, to leading youth nature hikes\, to homeschooling her own two children. She previously ran a nature education business for preschool aged children and has a Master’s in Education teaching mostly middle school math but also at the elementary and college level. She loves to camp\, tend her ever expanding gardens\, and trail run with the family dog. This is the third year Kelly has led walks for children with Scarborough Land Trust\, and her second year serving on SLT’s Communication\, Education\, and Outreach Committee. \nNote SLT’s Liability and Photo Release

SUMMARY:Mushroom Foraging
DESCRIPTION:This mushroom walk is designed to be an introduction to the Mycological world of Maine\, with a particular focus on edible mushrooms. The first half hour or so of class will be devoted to covering basic fungal biology and life cycle\, mushroom myths/truths\, and foraging practices. From there\, we’ll head into the forest and scan for mushrooms\, discussing our finds as we go. The species we are likely to find vary depending on season and location. By the end of class\, participants will walk away with growing confidence in several choice species and inspiration to learn more. As always\, we recommend sturdy footwear and insect repellant. Remain tick and insect aware! If you have a mushroom guide\, bring it along. If you’d like one\, you can purchase a guide through Scarborough Land Trust ahead of the event. Call the office to learn more at (207)289-1199. \nBio: Louis Giller has spent about a decade studying\, growing\, foraging\, and most importantly\, eating mushrooms. His mycological journey began at the University of Denver where he studied environmental science and conducted oyster mushroom research inspired by MycoCelebrity Paul Stamets. DESCRIPTION:Watching fireflies is a favorite summer evening pastime for many of us. But most of us have no idea what is really taking place in a firefly meadow. Join Don Salvatore\, long time science educator at the Museum of Science in Boston and past curator of the Firefly watch Citizen Science Project to learn about the “Secret Lives of Fireflies.” We will be walking in the dark\, so please bring a flashlight. SUMMARY:Story Time at the Survivor Elm
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Scarborough Public Library\, free 10:00am story time will feature books about trees! Join Kelly under the Survivor Elm at the Scarborough Land Trust Pleasant Hill Preserve. The Elm is located in the field on the right hand side of the parking lot and can be reached with a minimal\, easy walk to the mowed grass just past the kiosk. Please bring a blanket to sit on and be prepared for mosquitoes and ticks. At the conclusion of story time (10:30) join Kelly and her kids on a hike to explore the property. An ADA accessible trail will lead us towards the barn on the property for a mini nature lesson. Families wanting to explore onto the trails can continue on with Kelly or return on the same trail back to the parking lot.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Scarborough Land Trust for a wildflower walk at Warren Woods on Wednesday\, June 22nd\, from 10am til 12pm. Program lead Becky Warren Seel has deep family connections to this property and is very knowledgeable about the wildflowers that grow there and where to find them. We hope to see little orchids called Rose Pogonia and Grass Pink\, as well as a number of other unusual flowers and plants\, such as Sundew. The event is free\, but parking is limited so pre-registration is required.
