SUMMARY:Follow a Raindrop 3-Part Series (9am section)
DESCRIPTION:Follow a Raindrop is a 3-part educational program in collaboration with Friends of Scarborough Marsh intended for children ages 8-12. Along this journey\, we will investigate the physical properties of water and the biological organisms that depend upon this resource. Composed of three field experiences centered around three different natural communities – freshwater stream and wetland\, salt marsh\, and coastal beach\, participants will gain an appreciation for the complexity of Scarborough’s water systems and their impacts on all life. \n  \nWith a combination of informative and hands-on experiences\, participants should expect to get their hands (and the rest of them) wet! We will measure the characteristics of the water and sample the organisms that live at each site. Bathing suits\, and well-fitting waterproof shoes or sandals are a must. We also recommend a change of clothes and a towel. \n  \nThis is a 3-part series with the dates and locations below. One ticket registers an attendee for the 9am session on all three days. A 3pm section is also available here. \n\nWednesday\, July 26 | 9-10:30am | Broadturn Farm\nWednesday\, August 9 | 9-10:30am | Blue Point Preserve\nWednesday\, August 16 | 9-10:30am | Ferry Beach\n\n  \nPlease purchase one ticket for each child that will attend the program. DESCRIPTION:Bats: Fact vs. Myth\nJoin us in the field to talk about these misunderstood creatures. We will go over the species of bats found in Maine and their current conservation status. In addition\, we will dispel some myths frequently held about bats. Hopefully at dusk we can see some bats starting to leave the barn and feed for the night. Using a bat detector and an iPhone we will try to identify several species of bats from their ultrasonic frequencies. \nThis program will take place at Broadturn Farm.

Invasive species are organisms that are non-native to a particular area and cause harm to the environment where they are introduced. Every year the SLT stewardship committee and a team of dedicated volunteers work hard to manage and fight the spread of invasive species across our properties. We need your help identifying these species and working to remove them before they spread. \nAfter learning about species and management\, we will work on removing some from SLT’s properties. All ages welcome\, although children must be accompanied by an adult. Be prepared to walk a short distance\, potentially off the maintained trail. \nWe encourage stewardship volunteers to bring their own tools if they have them\, including gloves\, loppers\, trimmers\, shovels\, and any Personal Protective Equipment. We recommend wearing long pants\, comfortable footwear\, and applying bug spray. Remain tick and insect aware. \nRegistration required.

We’ll learn about the ferns and wildflowers that make this place their home and discuss the ways fractals offer wisdom for our lives. We’ll also engage in contemplative practice\, opening our minds and hearts as we relate to an alive and wise landscape.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis walk will be led by Nicole Diroff\, a Maine Master Naturalist\, United Church of Christ minister\, and Program Director at The BTS Center\, focused on spiritual leadership in a climate-changed world.\n\n\n\n\n\nFamilies with children age 8 and older are welcome to attend. Please dress for the weather as we will be outside for the entire time. Sunscreen and tick preventatives are recommended. SUMMARY:Amphibians and Reptiles of Southern Maine
DESCRIPTION:Join the Scarborough Land Trust and the Amphibian and Reptile Trust International (amphibianreptile.org) in a field program to learn about the common\, and not so common\, species of amphibians and reptiles found in Southern Maine. We will look for several species found on SLT properties\, focusing on general characteristics and habitat requirements. We will also discuss conservation status\, natural history and the ethics around handling amphibians and reptiles. \nOur instructor is Greg LeClair. Greg is a PhD student at the University of Maine where he studies environmental DNA applications for endangered species. Greg has been working in the field of herpetology (the study of amphibians and reptiles) since 2014. Greg created and manages the Maine Big Night\, a community science project focused on monitoring and assisting road-crossing of amphibians throughout the State. \nPlease dress appropriately for the weather\, including footwear for muddy or wet conditions. Also recommended are hat\, water\, insect repellent and sunscreen. Hand sanitizer is also recommended if you handle any reptiles and amphibians.  \nRegistration is restricted to participants ages 5 and older.

DESCRIPTION:Join instructor Heather Guglielmo for a peaceful morning of yoga overlooking the marsh at Blue Point Preserve. \nHeather is from NY & NH and fell in love with Maine and stayed. She started her yoga practice about eight years ago\, and just graduated with her RYT 200 Yoga Teacher Training with the Fluid Yoga School through Samudra in Biddeford\, ME. Her infectious laughter\, kind heart\, love for Thriller Flash Mob\, 80’s music\, her two dogs and Ireland will keep you coming back for more. She loves to teach outside and looks forward to teaching with SLT this Summer! \nAttendees should bring their own yoga mat or towel\, water\, weather-appropriate clothing\, and insect repellent. DESCRIPTION:Watching fireflies is a favorite summer evening pastime for many of us. But most of us have no idea what is really taking place in a firefly meadow. Join Don Salvatore\, long time science educator at the Museum of Science in Boston and past curator of the Firefly Watch Citizen Science Project to learn about the “Secret Lives of Fireflies.” We will be walking in the dark\, so please bring a flashlight. SUMMARY:Invasive Species Work Session
DESCRIPTION:Under the guidance of our Stewardship Director\, learn how to identify and combat invasive species at Scarborough Land Trust properties and in your own backyard! Invasive species are organisms that are non-native to a particular area and cause harm to the environment where they are introduced. Every year the SLT stewardship committee and a team of dedicated volunteers work hard to manage and fight the spread of invasive species across properties. We need your help identifying these species and working to remove them before they spread. \nAfter learning about species and management\, we will work on removing some from an SLT preserve. All ages welcome\, although children must be accompanied by an adult. Be prepared to walk a short distance\, potentially off the maintained trail. We encourage stewardship volunteers to bring their own tools\, if they have them\, including gloves\, loppers\, trimmers\, shovels\, and any Personal Protective Equipment. We recommend wearing long pants\, comfortable footwear\, and applying bug spray. Remain tick and insect aware. Registration required.

DESCRIPTION:The Contemplative Spring Walk is part of a year-long series of contemplative nature walks that honor the seasons and nurture connection with the natural world.\nA celebration of seasons\, this series of contemplative walks features reflection\, gratitude\, and nature ID. \nDuring this Spring Walk your perception will be expanded as you relate to Pleasant Hill Preserve through all four senses. We’ll learn about amazing bird features as we listen for their songs and track their movements. We’ll also engage in contemplative practice\, opening our minds and hearts as we relate to an alive and wise landscape.This walk will be led by Nicole Diroff\, a Maine Master Naturalist\, United Church of Christ minister\, and Program Director at The BTS Center\, focused on spiritual leadership in a climate-changed world.Families with children age 8 and older are welcome to attend. Please dress for the weather as we will be outside for the entire time. Sunscreen and tick preventatives are recommended. Also\, binoculars are encouraged if you have them!\n\nWe highly suggest you wear boots/shoes with sturdy traction. Please dress in layers. SUMMARY:Exploring Vernal Pools
DESCRIPTION:Join the Scarborough Land Trust and the Amphibian and Reptile Trust International (http://amphibianreptile.org) in discovering the secrets of vernal pool wetlands. These seasonal\, temporary wetlands are vital breeding habitat for several salamander and frog species in Maine. We will spend the first part of the workshop discussing vernal pools (unheated barn) and the second part in the field exploring several vernal pools on Scarborough Land Trust preserves. Our instructor is Greg LeClair. Greg is a PhD student at the University of Maine where he studies environmental DNA applications for endangered species. Greg has been working in the field of herpetology (study of amphibians and reptiles) since 2014. Greg created and manages the Maine Big Night\, a community science project focused on monitoring and assisting road-crossing of amphibians throughout the State. \nThis event is for ages 16 and older.

SUMMARY:Tour of the Night Sky Constellations
DESCRIPTION:Join Maine amateur astronomer James Shields\, and Scout Troop 35 from Yarmouth\, for a night sky tour of the constellations. \nWe will discuss the lore behind the constellations and how the ancients used the night sky to tell time\, the start of the seasons\, and navigate. We will also be using telescopes to view objects in the sky such as Orion’s Nebula\, galaxies\, and star clusters. \nFuller Farm offers a close-by opportunity to be farther away from light pollution so we can get a clearer view of the stars.  It is still March so dress warm and be prepared for the temperature to drop after dark. It is also recommended that you bring a chair to sit on\, a blanket\, a red light flashlight\, and a pair of binoculars if you have them. If you don’t have a red light flashlight\, we can cover a flashlight with red cellophane. \nRain date – March 25.
