SUMMARY:Addressing Environmental Challenges to Wildlife Through Collaborative Conservation Research
DESCRIPTION:Join Lucas Savoy to hear more about the vital work of the Biodiversity Research Institute.  Biodiversity Research Institute (BRI)\, is a Maine-based non-profit wildlife conservation and research group\, founded in 1998. BRI’s mission is to assess emerging threats to wildlife and ecosystems through collaborative research\, and to use scientific findings to advance environmental awareness and inform decision makers. Staff Scientists are involved in a wide range of projects that include national and global initiatives to identify ecological pressures and implement research to develop conservation strategies. Some of BRI’s current projects include minimizing the effects of offshore wind development to avian species\, harmonizing hydroelectric practices with Common Loon conservation\, mapping the annual movements of secretive bird species to aid in developing their conservation plans\, and identifying at-risk species and areas from pollutants\, such as mercury and PFAS forever chemicals.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER/TRAIL CONDITIONS: Women's Walk
DESCRIPTION:Come meet up with fellow women who enjoy the outdoors and have a desire to walk the wonderful open spaces Scarborough Land Trust has committed to preserving. Women are twice as likely as men to feel uncomfortable walking alone\, so we created this monthly program to foster a fun and supportive community for women to walk together and get to know our preserves. \nThese walks average 60-90 mins in length with a leisurely pace as we observe the landscape and wildlife. Bring binoculars or a camera if you are so inclined. Much of the terrain will be flat (either dirt or grass surfaces) but expect that there will brief uphill stretches\, wood crossings for boggy areas\, and some uneven ground (rocks\, tree roots). Trails could be wet with dew or muddy if there have been recent rains\, although we will postpone or reschedule if inclement weather is forecasted during the event itself. As always\, we recommend wearing long pants\, comfortable footwear\, and sunscreen as appropriate. \n4 slots will be available through the Scarborough Land Trust website and 12 through MeetUp: https://www.meetup.com/scarborough-land-trust-nature-and-farm-events/events/307449497/. \nParking can be limited on good weather weekends\, so if you are bringing a companion\, please carpool. \nAlthough most SLT properties are dog friendly\, we ask that you not bring dogs to this event.

SUMMARY:Native Plant Backyard Garden Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Scarborough Land Trust and Kelly Pietrzak on a backyard garden tour focused on landscaping with native plants. If you are curious about how to start in your own yard\, come learn and see a yard in various stages of transformation. \n  \nThis yard was specifically chosen to show ways native plants help attract pollinators\, support local wildlife and create beautiful landscapes. The yard contains a chemical and pesticide free lawn that does not require frequent mowing as well as sections that are encouraged to re-wild with gentle encouragement.  Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a newcomer to the world of native plants\, this tour promises to inspire and educate\, leaving you with ideas for bringing natives and nature back into your outdoor space. \n  \nVolunteer Kelly Pietrzak is passionate about sustainability in everyday life\, gardening and landscaping. She is gradually introducing native plants into her family’s yard to create beautiful\, safe\, sustaining space for her family and all Maine’s creatures.

SUMMARY:Postponed due to tree conditions - Searching for Ash Workshop
DESCRIPTION:NEW DATE TBD – JUNE \nLearn to identify native ash species and their flowers at Fuller Farm. As an APCAW partner\, SLT has been recording the location of ash on our preserves. This will help SLT look for seeds in the fall\, which can be collected and saved in a seed bank to protect the future of these species and help ecologists understand how genetics impacts these trees’ resistance to EAB (emerald ash borer). \n  \n

SUMMARY:Women's Walk Has Been Canceled Due to Weather
\nParking can be limited on good weather weekends\, so if you are bringing a companion\, please carpool. \nAlthough most SLT properties are dog friendly\, we ask that you not bring dogs to this event.
