SUMMARY:Women's Walk
DESCRIPTION:Come meet up with fellow women who enjoy the outdoors and have a desire to walk the wonderful open spaces Scarborough Land Trust has committed to preserving. Women are twice as likely as men to feel uncomfortable walking alone\, so we created this monthly program to foster a fun and supportive community for women to walk together and get to know our preserves. \nThese walks average 60-90 mins in length with a leisurely pace as we observe the landscape and wildlife (migrating birds\, wildflowers\, etc). Bring binoculars or a camera if you are so inclined. Much of the terrain will be flat (either dirt or grass surfaces) but expect that there will brief uphill stretches\, wood crossings for boggy areas\, and some uneven ground (rocks\, tree roots). Trails could be wet with dew or muddy if there have been recent rains\, although we will postpone or reschedule if inclement weather is forecasted during the event itself. As always\, we recommend wearing long pants\, comfortable footwear\, and sunscreen as appropriate. \nParking can be limited on good weather weekends\, so if you are bringing a companion\, please carpool. \nAlthough most SLT properties are dog friendly\, we ask that you not bring dogs to this event.

DESCRIPTION:Join Maine Master Naturalist Christie Constantine\, co-leading with Elise Smorczewski\, for a special evening in celebration of National Moth Week\, where we’ll explore the beauty\, diversity\, and ecological importance of moths. Using lights and white sheets\, we’ll attract\, observe\, and photograph a wide variety of moths and other nighttime insects. \nAlong the way\, participants will learn about the moth life cycle\, the vital role Maine’s 4\,000 moth species play in supporting songbirds\, mammals\, amphibians\, and other insects\, and their often overlooked work as “night-shift” pollinators\, visiting even more plant species than daytime pollinators like bees. SUMMARY:Women's Walk
DESCRIPTION:Come meet up with fellow women who enjoy the outdoors and have a desire to walk the wonderful open spaces Scarborough Land Trust has committed to preserving. Women are twice as likely as men to feel uncomfortable walking alone\, so we created this monthly program to foster a fun and supportive community for women to walk together and get to know our preserves. \nThese walks average 60-90 mins in length with a leisurely pace as we observe the landscape and wildlife (migrating birds\, wildflowers\, etc). Bring binoculars or a camera if you are so inclined. Much of the terrain will be flat (either dirt or grass surfaces) but expect that there will brief uphill stretches\, wood crossings for boggy areas\, and some uneven ground (rocks\, tree roots). Trails could be wet with dew or muddy if there have been recent rains\, although we will postpone or reschedule if inclement weather is forecasted during the event itself. As always\, we recommend wearing long pants\, comfortable footwear\, and sunscreen as appropriate. \nParking can be limited on good weather weekends\, so if you are bringing a companion\, please carpool. \nAlthough most SLT properties are dog friendly\, we ask that you not bring dogs to this event. \nSLT rarely cancels programs but occasionally we must\, especially in bad weather. SUMMARY:A Day in the Life of a Pond
DESCRIPTION:Ponds of all shapes and sizes support a magnificent multitude of life forms\, ranging in size from microorganisms to moose. Plants can range from single-celled algae to massive reeds. Insects\, amphibians\, fish\, birds\, mammals are all thriving and contributing to the mix. Ponds are NOT a study in ‘Survival of the Fittest.’ Every species we will see has adapted its own niche using the evolutionary principle understood as “Resource Partitioning.” \nKate Borduas is a self-described “Adult-onset” Naturalist. A native of coastal Maine\, she spent a number of years in Florida where she trained as a Florida Master Naturalist and as a nationally Certified Interpretive Guide. \nFollowing a life-long\, long-distance love affair with nature\, Kate was delighted to live the life of a naturalist full time while in Florida. She gave frequent walks and talks in Charlotte and Sarasota Counties with a specific focus on Scrub Habitat and the Endangered Florida Scrub Jay. SUMMARY:A River Runs Through It: A 'Good News' 'Bad News' Story
DESCRIPTION:Good News: Aquatic systems need clean water to thrive. The paper/pulp industry resulted in the nation’s most polluted rivers occuring right here in Maine – The Androscoggin and Penobscott particularly.  The Clean Water Act of 1972 (Thank You\, Ed Muskie!) resulted in manufacturing changes that eliminated the worst biosolid and chemical discharge practices. Our rivers are once again full of life. \nBad News: Many chemicals are persistent and some are persistent forever. Sediments in the major river deltas are loaded with mercury and dioxins that still require remediation 60 years later.  And where river waters do run clear\, climate disruption and invasive species are wreaking havoc.  \nKate Borduas is a self-described “Adult-onset” Naturalist.
