SUMMARY:Women's Walk
DESCRIPTION:Come meet up with fellow women who enjoy the outdoors and have a desire to walk the wonderful open spaces Scarborough Land Trust has committed to preserving. Women are twice as likely as men to feel uncomfortable walking alone\, so we created this monthly program to foster a fun and supportive community for women to walk together and get to know our preserves. \nThese walks average 60-90 mins in length with a leisurely pace as we observe the landscape and wildlife. Bring binoculars or a camera if you are so inclined. Much of the terrain will be flat (either dirt or grass surfaces) but expect that there will brief uphill stretches\, wood crossings for boggy areas\, and some uneven ground (rocks\, tree roots). Trails could be wet with dew or muddy if there have been recent rains\, although we will postpone or reschedule if inclement weather is forecasted during the event itself. As always\, we recommend wearing long pants\, comfortable footwear\, and sunscreen as appropriate. \nParking can be limited on good weather weekends\, so if you are bringing a companion\, please carpool. \nAlthough most SLT properties are dog friendly\, we ask that you not bring dogs to this event.

SUMMARY:Birds\, Plants\, and Imagination: A Family-Friendly Walk
DESCRIPTION:Raising children in a world defined by a changing climate can be overwhelming.  The uncertainties are real\, but so are the possibilities.  Knowing people will protect what they love\, this walk helps children\, and their adults\, fall in love with the natural world.  On this winter walk\, we’ll learn about some of the birds and plants that call Scarborough home.  We’ll also tap into our imaginations and build relationships with the alive and wise world that surrounds us. \n  \nThis walk will be co-led by Nicole Diroff\, a United Church of Christ minister and Maine Master Naturalist\, and Elliott\, her 11 year old son and bird enthusiast.  People of all ages are welcome for this intergenerational program. \n  \nPlease dress for the weather.  Snow pants\, warm gloves and boots with spikes are encouraged. \n

SUMMARY:Snowshoe Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Diane Neal\, SLT Board Member\, for a guided snowshoe tour of Pleasant Hill Preserve. This will be a leisurely walk on flat terrain. Frozen ground will allow participants to see areas of the preserve that are not accessible during the rest of the year. Please dress for winter. \nThe event will go on with or without snow. If there is not enough snow for snowshoes\, please\, wear boots with sturdy traction. We highly suggest you bring ice traction for you boots: micro-spikes\, yak trax\, nanospikes\, etc. \nNote SLT’s Liability and Photo Release Form

SUMMARY:Addressing Environmental Challenges to Wildlife Through Collaborative Conservation Research
DESCRIPTION:Join Lucas Savoy to hear more about the vital work of the Biodiversity Research Institute.  Biodiversity Research Institute (BRI)\, is a Maine-based non-profit wildlife conservation and research group\, founded in 1998. BRI’s mission is to assess emerging threats to wildlife and ecosystems through collaborative research\, and to use scientific findings to advance environmental awareness and inform decision makers. Staff Scientists are involved in a wide range of projects that include national and global initiatives to identify ecological pressures and implement research to develop conservation strategies. Some of BRI’s current projects include minimizing the effects of offshore wind development to avian species\, harmonizing hydroelectric practices with Common Loon conservation\, mapping the annual movements of secretive bird species to aid in developing their conservation plans\, and identifying at-risk species and areas from pollutants\, such as mercury and PFAS forever chemicals.

SUMMARY:Sustainable Landscaping and Integrated Pest Management
DESCRIPTION:Gary Fish\, State Horticulturist at the Maine Department of Agriculture\, Conservation\, and Forestry\, will help us explore the wonders of sustainable landscaping.  Gary will lead us to discover how this practice contributes to a healthy environment by conserving water\, reducing inputs\, and creating wildlife habitat.  Gary will also show us how integrated pest management can be key to sustainable landscaping.  We will learn how to minimize reliance on pesticides by identifying\, monitoring\, and managing pests with multiple tactics.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER/TRAIL CONDITIONS: Women's Walk
\n4 slots will be available through the Scarborough Land Trust website and 12 through MeetUp: https://www.meetup.com/scarborough-land-trust-nature-and-farm-events/events/307449497/. \nParking can be limited on good weather weekends\, so if you are bringing a companion\, please carpool. \nAlthough most SLT properties are dog friendly\, we ask that you not bring dogs to this event.
