SUMMARY:Native Seed Sowing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, Heather will lead a hands-on experience in native seed propagation\, from ecologically-responsible seed collection and storing procedures to germination techniques.\nWe will learn about wildflowers\, shrubs\, trees and ferns\, with an emphasis on outdoor seed sowing in pots or growing beds. Be prepared to dig your hands deep into the diversity of native seeds! Participants will go home with two pots sown with native seeds and the inspiration to sow more species in late fall/early winter. \nHeather McCargo\, founder of The Wild Seed Project\, is an educator with 35 years of expertise in plant propagation\, landscape design\, and conservation. She was the head plant propagator at the New England Wildflower Society’s Garden in the Woods during the 1990s\, worked at several landscape architecture/planning firms specializing in ecological design\, and has been a contributor to several research projects with USAID\, the National Gardening Association\, and MOFGA. She has lectured nationally and is widely published in journals and magazines such as Horticulture and American Nurseryman. More locally\, Heather designed the master plan for the medicinal gardens at Avena Botanicals in Rockland and was the creator and lead teacher for the Bay School’s Agricultural Arts program. Heather has a B.A. in plant ecology from Hampshire College\, and an M.A. from the Conway School of Landscape Design. \nClass fee is $30 which covers pots\, soil\, seeds and the workshop. \nTickets are sold per person. Register below. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote SLT’s Liability and Photo Release Form

SUMMARY:Woodland Climate Change Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Saco Valley Land Trust and Scarborough Land Trust have teamed up to offer a presentation and Q&A by Tom Doak of Maine Woodland Owners\, focused on the impacts of climate change to Maine’s forests\, and what we can do to both protect and improve our forested lands for the future. The presentation and Q&A will be held on Thursday\, November 10th\, 6 to 8pm at the Deering Room at the Dyer Library\, 317 Main Street in Saco. \nTom Doak is the Executive Director of Maine Woodland Owners and recently served on the Maine Forest Carbon Task Force\, which aimed to encourage carbon sequestration in smaller forests across the state. During the presentation\, Tom will touch on the work of the Maine Forest Carbon Task Force and the larger picture of Maine Won’t Wait\, and describe how this state-level work can result in positive local changes for our communities. For more information about the event or the land trusts\, please contact Sue Littlefield at sacovalleymaine@gmail.com\, or call 207-282-0153. \n  \nThis event is part of a series on climate change in partnership with Saco Valley Land Trust.
