Wildlife tracking\, bird language\, wild foods\, pattern recognition and natural movement are just some of the topics that could come up on the walk. \nWhen we begin to see the subtle patterns and behaviors on our landscapes as clues we can unlock the mysteries of nature and engage fully as resourceful and resilient people and communities. Our ancestors learned these skills at an early age. We can regain them and deepen our connection to the world around us. You’ll leave having learned something new about yourself\, the landscape and your connection to it. See you on the trail! \nThis event is for adults and children 10+ years of age. DESCRIPTION:Under the guidance of our Stewardship Director\, Samantha Wolf\, learn how to identify and combat invasive species at Scarborough Land Trust properties and in your own backyard! Invasive species are organisms that are non-native to a particular area and cause harm to the environment where they are introduced. Every year the SLT stewardship committee and a team of dedicated volunteers work hard to manage and fight the spread of invasive species across our properties. We need your help identifying these species and working to remove them before they spread. \nAfter learning about species and management\, we will work on removing some from SLT’s properties. All ages welcome\, although children must be accompanied by an adult. Be prepared to walk a short distance\, potentially off the maintained trail. \nWe encourage stewardship volunteers to bring their own tools if they have them\, including gloves\, loppers\, trimmers\, shovels\, and any Personal Protective Equipment. We recommend wearing long pants\, comfortable footwear\, and applying bug spray. Remain tick and insect aware. \nRegistration required.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at Fuller Farm Preserve at 9am on Wednesday\, August 16 as we continue to rebuild the Bird Trail. Alongside SLT staff and Fuller Farm’s Lead Steward Tom Nolan\, volunteers will assist in constructing new walking platforms along the Bird Trail. \nThis workday is open to volunteers of all ages – even young kids can help carry materials or pick up scraps. Work gloves and hiking boots or other sturdy closed-toed shoes are recommended. Please also bring water and any snacks you may like. \nAnother session of the same work will take place on Tuesday\, August 29 at 9am.

DESCRIPTION:We are excited for the third stop on our Follow a Raindrop journey – Ferry Beach in Scarborough.\nFollow a Raindrop is a 3-part educational program in collaboration with Friends of Scarborough Marsh intended for children ages 8-12. In this session\, we will investigate the physical properties of water and the biological organisms that depend upon this resource at Ferry Beach along Scarborough’s coast. Participants will gain an appreciation for the complexity of Scarborough’s water systems and their impacts on all life. \nWith a combination of informative and hands-on experiences\, participants should expect to get their hands (and the rest of them) wet! We will measure the characteristics of the water and sample the aquatic organisms that live in at the beach. Bathing suits\, and well-fitting waterproof shoes or sandals are a must. We also recommend a change of clothes and a towel. \nPlease purchase one ticket for each child that will attend the program. Parents are not required to buy a ticket\, but are asked to attend the program and stay with their child(ren) for the duration of the event. \nIf you are interested in securing scholarship funding\, please email Henry at hgustavson@scarboroughlandtrust.org to learn more. \nPlease note that attendees must pay to park at Ferry Beach\, but are welcome to stay at the beach on their own for the rest of the day after our program. DESCRIPTION:Join instructor Heather Guglielmo for a peaceful morning of yoga among the flowers at Broadturn Farm. \nHeather is from NY & NH and fell in love with Maine and stayed. She started her yoga practice about eight years ago\, and just graduated with her RYT 200 Yoga Teacher Training with the Fluid Yoga School through Samudra in Biddeford\, ME. Her infectious laughter\, kind heart\, love for Thriller Flash Mob\, 80’s music\, her two dogs and Ireland will keep you coming back for more. She loves to teach outside and looks forward to teaching with SLT this Summer! \nAttendees should bring their own yoga mat or towel\, water\, weather-appropriate clothing\, and insect repellent. DESCRIPTION:Bats: Fact vs. Myth\nJoin us in the field to talk about these misunderstood creatures. We will go over the species of bats found in Maine and their current conservation status. In addition\, we will dispel some myths frequently held about bats. Hopefully at dusk we can see some bats starting to leave the barn and feed for the night. Using a bat detector and an iPhone we will try to identify several species of bats from their ultrasonic frequencies. \nThis program will take place at Broadturn Farm.

We need your help identifying these species and working to remove them before they spread. \nAfter learning about species and management\, we will work on removing some from SLT’s properties. All ages welcome\, although children must be accompanied by an adult. Be prepared to walk a short distance\, potentially off the maintained trail. \nWe encourage stewardship volunteers to bring their own tools if they have them\, including gloves\, loppers\, trimmers\, shovels\, and any Personal Protective Equipment. We recommend wearing long pants\, comfortable footwear\, and applying bug spray. Remain tick and insect aware. \nRegistration required.

DESCRIPTION:The Contemplative Summer Walk is part of a year-long series of contemplative nature walks that honor the seasons and nurture connection with the natural world.\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring this Summer Walk your perception will be expanded as you relate to Pleasant Hill Preserve by noticing tiny treasures. We’ll learn about the ferns and wildflowers that make this place their home and discuss the ways fractals offer wisdom for our lives. We’ll also engage in contemplative practice\, opening our minds and hearts as we relate to an alive and wise landscape.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis walk will be led by Nicole Diroff\, a Maine Master Naturalist\, United Church of Christ minister\, and Program Director at The BTS Center\, focused on spiritual leadership in a climate-changed world.\n\n\n\n\n\nFamilies with children age 8 and older are welcome to attend. Please dress for the weather as we will be outside for the entire time. Sunscreen and tick preventatives are recommended. SUMMARY:Amphibians and Reptiles of Southern Maine
DESCRIPTION:Join the Scarborough Land Trust and the Amphibian and Reptile Trust International (amphibianreptile.org) in a field program to learn about the common\, and not so common\, species of amphibians and reptiles found in Southern Maine. We will look for several species found on SLT properties\, focusing on general characteristics and habitat requirements. We will also discuss conservation status\, natural history and the ethics around handling amphibians and reptiles. \nOur instructor is Greg LeClair. Greg is a PhD student at the University of Maine where he studies environmental DNA applications for endangered species. Greg has been working in the field of herpetology (the study of amphibians and reptiles) since 2014. Greg created and manages the Maine Big Night\, a community science project focused on monitoring and assisting road-crossing of amphibians throughout the State. \nPlease dress appropriately for the weather\, including footwear for muddy or wet conditions. Also recommended are hat\, water\, insect repellent and sunscreen. Hand sanitizer is also recommended if you handle any reptiles and amphibians.  \nRegistration is restricted to participants ages 5 and older.

She started her yoga practice about eight years ago\, and just graduated with her RYT 200 Yoga Teacher Training with the Fluid Yoga School through Samudra in Biddeford\, ME. Her infectious laughter\, kind heart\, love for Thriller Flash Mob\, 80’s music\, her two dogs and Ireland will keep you coming back for more.
