In 2025\, their collaborative birding effort led to a new Maine Big Year record of 332 species identified across the state. \n\nDuring this fascinating program\, Stacey and Noah will share the story behind their record-setting adventure\, including how they combined careful planning\, scientific thinking\, and expert birding skills to achieve their goal. Through stories and readings from their book\, attendees will gain insight into the challenges\, discoveries\, and teamwork that made their journey a success. \nCopies of An Experiment in Birding will be available for purchase and signing following the presentation. \nThis event is free and open to all. Whether you’re an experienced birder or simply curious about Maine’s incredible birdlife\, you’ll enjoy this inspiring tale of friendship\, perseverance\, and exploration. \nAbout the Auhors: \nStacey Pazar Huth\, PhD\, is a longtime Southern Maine resident\, scientist\, and Trustee of Maine Audubon. After a career spanning more than three decades in science and corporate leadership\, she rekindled her lifelong passion for birding and enjoys exploring Maine’s diverse habitats. \nNoah Gibb is a lifelong Mainer\, birding guide\, photographer\, and owner of Noah’s Birding Tours\, LLC. He is well known throughout Maine’s birding community for his keen visual and auditory bird identification skills and deep knowledge of Maine birds.

SUMMARY:Wonderful World of Insects: Insect Armageddon
DESCRIPTION:Insects are suffering population losses so vast that it has been called “Insect Armageddon.” Also “The Death of a Thousand Cuts.” What is causing the damage to insect populations? Can insects adapt to climate change? And can losses be reversed? What will the loss of insects mean for the health of the planet? \nKate Borduas is a self-described “Adult-onset” Naturalist. A native of coastal Maine\, she spent a number of years in Florida where she trained as a Florida Master Naturalist and as a nationally Certified Interpretive Guide. \nFollowing a life-long\, long-distance love affair with nature\, Kate was delighted to live the life of a naturalist full time while in Florida. She gave frequent walks and talks in Charlotte and Sarasota Counties with a specific focus on Scrub Habitat and the Endangered Florida Scrub Jay. SUMMARY:Women's Walk
DESCRIPTION:*** Note: Meeting place is the Eastern Trail parking lot on the Pine Point Road. \nCome meet up with fellow women who enjoy the outdoors and have a desire to walk the wonderful open spaces Scarborough Land Trust has committed to preserving. Women are twice as likely as men to feel uncomfortable walking alone\, so we created this monthly program to foster a fun and supportive community for women to walk together and get to know our preserves. \nThese walks average 60-90 mins in length with a leisurely pace as we observe the landscape and wildlife (migrating birds\, wildflowers\, etc). Bring binoculars or a camera if you are so inclined. Much of the terrain will be flat (either dirt or grass surfaces) but expect that there will brief uphill stretches\, wood crossings for boggy areas\, and some uneven ground (rocks\, tree roots). Trails could be wet with dew or muddy if there have been recent rains\, although we will postpone or reschedule if inclement weather is forecasted during the event itself. As always\, we recommend wearing long pants\, comfortable footwear\, and sunscreen as appropriate. \nParking can be limited on good weather weekends\, so if you are bringing a companion\, please carpool. \nAlthough most SLT properties are dog friendly\, we ask that you not bring dogs to this event. \nSLT rarely cancels programs but occasionally we must\, especially in bad weather. Please check our website before heading out to a program to ensure it is still being held.
