SUMMARY:Women's Walk Cancelled due to weather
DESCRIPTION:Come meet up with fellow women who enjoy the outdoors and have a desire to walk the wonderful open spaces Scarborough Land Trust has committed to preserving. Women are twice as likely as men to feel uncomfortable walking alone\, so we created this monthly program to foster a fun and supportive community for women to walk together and get to know our preserves. \nThese walks average 60-90 mins in length with a leisurely pace as we observe the landscape and wildlife. Bring binoculars or a camera if you are so inclined. Much of the terrain will be flat (either dirt or grass surfaces) but expect that there will brief uphill stretches\, wood crossings for boggy areas\, and some uneven ground (rocks\, tree roots). Trails could be wet with dew or muddy if there have been recent rains\, although we will postpone or reschedule if inclement weather is forecasted during the event itself. As always\, we recommend wearing long pants\, comfortable footwear\, and sunscreen as appropriate. \nParking can be limited on good weather weekends\, so if you are bringing a companion\, please carpool. \nAlthough most SLT properties are dog friendly\, we ask that you not bring dogs to this event.

In addition\, we will dispel some myths frequently held about bats. Hopefully at dusk we can see some bats starting to leave the barn and feed for the night. Using a bat detector and an iPhone we will try to identify several species of bats from their ultrasonic frequencies.

SUMMARY:Women's Walk
DESCRIPTION:Come meet up with fellow women who enjoy the outdoors and have a desire to walk the wonderful open spaces Scarborough Land Trust has committed to preserving. Women are twice as likely as men to feel uncomfortable walking alone\, so we created this monthly program to foster a fun and supportive community for women to walk together and get to know our preserves. \nThese walks average 60-90 mins in length with a leisurely pace as we observe the landscape and wildlife (migrating birds\, wildflowers beginning to appear\, etc). Bring binoculars or a camera if you are so inclined. Much of the terrain will be flat (either dirt or grass surfaces) but expect that there will brief uphill stretches\, wood crossings for boggy areas\, and some uneven ground (rocks\, tree roots). Trails could be wet with dew or muddy if there have been recent rains\, although we will postpone or reschedule if inclement weather is forecasted during the event itself. As always\, we recommend wearing long pants\, comfortable footwear\, and sunscreen as appropriate. \nParking can be limited on good weather weekends\, so if you are bringing a companion\, please carpool. \nAlthough most SLT properties are dog friendly\, we ask that you not bring dogs to this event.

Using a bat detector and an iPhone we will try to identify several species of bats from their ultrasonic frequencies. \nThis program will take place at Broadturn Farm.

DESCRIPTION:Join Andrew Mackie\, SLT’s Executive Director\, and Eddie Woodin for an afternoon bird walk at Broadturn Farm. Andrew and Mr. Woodin will take participants on a short hike and help participants identify birds they observe along the way.   \nThis program will be geared towards beginning and intermediate birders but all ages and skill levels are encouraged to attend. SUMMARY:Exploring Vernal Pools
DESCRIPTION:Join the Scarborough Land Trust and the Amphibian and Reptile Trust International (http://amphibianreptile.org) in discovering the secrets of vernal pool wetlands. These seasonal\, temporary wetlands are vital breeding habitat for several salamander and frog species in Maine. We will spend the first part of the workshop discussing vernal pools (unheated barn) and the second part in the field exploring several vernal pools on Scarborough Land Trust preserves. Our instructor is Greg LeClair. Greg is a PhD student at the University of Maine where he studies environmental DNA applications for endangered species. Greg has been working in the field of herpetology (study of amphibians and reptiles) since 2014. Greg created and manages the Maine Big Night\, a community science project focused on monitoring and assisting road-crossing of amphibians throughout the State. \nThis event is for ages 16 and older.

Each week will take a close look at water and its important role in the environment. Each session will be 2 hours long\, starting at 3 PM and concluding at 5 PM. \nSession 1 – Freshwater (Wednesday\, August 10) \nWe will begin the series with a trip to Broadturn Farm where participants can explore streams with dip nets and magnifying glasses.
