SUMMARY:Women's Walk
DESCRIPTION:Come meet up with fellow women who enjoy the outdoors and have a desire to walk the wonderful open spaces Scarborough Land Trust has committed to preserving. Women are twice as likely as men to feel uncomfortable walking alone\, so we created this monthly program to foster a fun and supportive community for women to walk together and get to know our preserves. \nThese walks average 60-90 mins in length with a leisurely pace as we observe the landscape and wildlife (migrating birds\, wildflowers beginning to appear\, etc). Bring binoculars or a camera if you are so inclined. Much of the terrain will be flat (either dirt or grass surfaces) but expect that there will brief uphill stretches\, wood crossings for boggy areas\, and some uneven ground (rocks\, tree roots). Trails could be wet with dew or muddy if there have been recent rains\, although we will postpone or reschedule if inclement weather is forecasted during the event itself. As always\, we recommend wearing long pants\, comfortable footwear\, and sunscreen as appropriate. \nParking can be limited on good weather weekends\, so if you are bringing a companion\, please carpool. \n8 spots will be available here and 12 will be offered through our MeetUp group: https://www.meetup.com/scarborough-land-trust-nature-and-farm-events/. \nAlthough most SLT properties are dog friendly\, we ask that you not bring dogs to this event.

SUMMARY:Showshoe Tour of Fuller Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join Diane Neal\, SLT Board Member\, for a guided snowshoe tour of Fuller Farm. This will be a leisurely walk on flat terrain. Frozen ground will allow participants to see areas of the preserve that are not accessible during the rest of the year. The trails at Fuller Farm provide spectacular views but winter allows access to even more areas of the property. \nThis event is open to all ages and is good for all fitness levels\, although participants will need to provide their own snowshoes. Please dress for winter. \nThe event will go on with or without snow. If there is not enough snow for snowshoes\, please\, wear boots with sturdy traction. We highly suggest you bring ice traction for you boots: micro-spikes\, yak trax\, nanospikes\, etc. \nNote SLT’s Liability and Photo Release Form

We recommend bringing micro spikes or other traction aids for shoes to allow for better stability\, but we will also have a few sets to lend out. And if there’s been recent snow\, snowshoes are welcome. \nWe are intending to keep this a monthly event through the winter\, as we had such positive feedback on the initial pilot walks. \nAlthough SLT properties are dog friendly\, we are asking that you not bring dogs to this event.

SUMMARY:Tour of The Night Sky
DESCRIPTION:Join Maine amateur astronomer James Shields for a night sky tour of the constellations. \nWe will discuss the lore behind the constellations and how the ancients used the night sky to tell time\, the start of the seasons\, and navigate. We will also be using telescopes to view objects in the sky such as Orion’s Nebula\, galaxies\, and star clusters. \nFuller Farm offers a close-by opportunity to be farther away from light pollution so we can get a clearer view of the stars.  Dress warm and be prepared for the temperature to drop after dark. It is also recommended that you bring a chair to sit on\, a blanket\, a red light flashlight\, and a pair of binoculars if you have them. If you don’t have a red light flashlight\, we can cover a flashlight with red cellophane.

Women are twice as likely as men to feel uncomfortable walking alone\, so a suggestion was made that we explore a women’s walking group or series of events. SLT volunteers will be hosting two pilot walks during October/November at area preserves to explore interest and what days/times might work best for this sort of activity. \nThese will be leisurely walks averaging 45-60 mins in length.  Much of the terrain will be flat (either dirt or grass surfaces) but expect that there will brief uphill stretches\, wood crossings for boggy areas\, and some uneven ground (rocks\, tree roots).  Trails could be wet with dew or muddy if there have been recent rains\, although we will reschedule if inclement weather is forecasted during the event itself. SUMMARY:Nature Awareness Walk at Fuller Farm Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join Educator & Naturalist Ryan Busby for an exploration of Fuller Farm Preserve as he shares techniques for awakening your senses to the living landscape. Wildlife tracking\, bird language\, wild foods\, pattern recognition and natural movement are just some of the topics that could come up on the walk. \nWhen we begin to see the subtle patterns and behaviors on our landscapes as clues we can unlock the mysteries of nature and engage fully as resourceful and resilient people and communities. Our ancestors learned these skills at an early age. We can regain them and deepen our connection to the world around us. You’ll leave having learned something new about yourself\, the landscape and your connection to it. See you on the trail! \nThis event is for adults and children 10+ years of age. Please do not bring your dog as they can disrupt the group and the wildlife around us. \nRegistration for this even is managed externally. Click here for registration options.

SUMMARY:Mushroom Foraging
DESCRIPTION:This mushroom walk is designed to be an introduction to the Mycological world of Maine\, with a particular focus on edible mushrooms. The first half hour or so of class will be devoted to covering basic fungal biology and life cycle\, mushroom myths/truths\, and foraging practices. From there\, we’ll head into the forest and scan for mushrooms\, discussing our finds as we go. The species we are likely to find vary depending on season and location. By the end of class\, participants will walk away with growing confidence in several choice species and inspiration to learn more. As always\, we recommend sturdy footwear and insect repellant. Remain tick and insect aware! If you have a mushroom guide\, bring it along. If you’d like one\, you can purchase a guide through Scarborough Land Trust ahead of the event. Call the office to learn more at (207)289-1199. \nBio: Louis Giller has spent about a decade studying\, growing\, foraging\, and most importantly\, eating mushrooms. His mycological journey began at the University of Denver where he studied environmental science and conducted oyster mushroom research inspired by MycoCelebrity Paul Stamets. He found North Spore about 4 years ago\, where he primarily works on product production\, education\, and community outreach. \nNote SLT’s Liability and Photo Release Form  \nUpdated: Tickets $35/individual\, to be sold by NorthSpore \nGet tickets at https://northspore.com/products/event-mushroom-identification-walk-at-fuller-farm
