SUMMARY:Snowshoe Tour of Pleasant Hill Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join Diane Neal\, SLT Board Member\, for a guided snowshoe tour of Pleasant Hill Preserve. This will be a leisurely walk on flat terrain. Frozen ground will allow participants to see areas of the preserve that are not accessible during the rest of the year. The trails at Pleasant Hill provide spectacular views but winter allows access to even more areas of the property. \nThis free event is open to all ages and is good for all fitness levels\, although participants will need to provide their own snowshoes. Please dress for winter. \nThe event will go on with or without snow. If there is not enough snow for snowshoes\, please\, wear boots with sturdy traction. We highly suggest you bring ice traction for you boots: micro-spikes\, yak trax\, nanospikes\, etc. \nNote SLT’s Liability and Photo Release Form

SUMMARY:Winter Tree ID Walk
DESCRIPTION:In Maine\, our trees are leafless for half of the year or more\, so we must find other clues to tell them apart when they are dormant. On this walk we will learn to identify common trees by their buds\, twigs\, bark\, and structure.\n\nAndy Kapinos is a Field Naturalist at Maine Audubon. Originally from Western Massachusetts\, he has worked previously as a high school teacher of Nature Study and Birding\, and studied Agroecology at the Swedish Agricultural University and Plant\, Soil\, and Insect Sciences at UMass – Amherst. His interests include birds\, native plants\, ethnobotany\, ecology\, and the intersections therein. He also enjoys cooking\, playing music\, and hiking with his dog Rosie.

SUMMARY:Women's Walk
DESCRIPTION:Come join fellow women who enjoy the outdoors and have a desire to walk the wonderful open spaces Scarborough Land Trust has committed to preserving. Women are twice as likely as men to feel uncomfortable walking alone\, so a suggestion was made that we explore a women’s walking group or series of events. \nThese will be leisurely walks averaging 45-60 mins in length.  Much of the terrain will be flat (either dirt or grass surfaces) but expect that there will brief uphill stretches\, wood crossings for boggy areas\, and some uneven ground (rocks\, tree roots).  Trails could be wet with dew or muddy if there have been recent rains\, although we will reschedule if inclement weather is forecasted during the event itself. As always\, we recommend wearing long pants\, comfortable footwear\, and applying bug spray. Remain tick and insect aware. \nAlthough SLT properties are dog friendly\, we are asking that you not bring dogs to this event.

Women are twice as likely as men to feel uncomfortable walking alone\, so a suggestion was made that we explore a women’s walking group or series of events. SUMMARY:Invasive Species Info and Work Session
DESCRIPTION:Under the guidance of our Stewardship Director\, Samantha Wolf\, learn how to identify and combat invasive species at Scarborough Land Trust properties and in your own backyard! Invasive species are organisms that are non-native to a particular area and cause harm to the environment where they are introduced. Every year the SLT stewardship committee and a team of dedicated volunteers work hard to manage and fight the spread of invasive species across our properties. We need your help identifying these species and working to remove them before they spread. \nAfter learning about species and management\, we will work on removing some from SLT’s properties. All ages welcome\, although children must be accompanied by an adult. Be prepared to walk a short distance\, potentially off the maintained trail. \nWe encourage stewardship volunteers to bring their own tools if they have them\, including gloves\, loppers\, trimmers\, shovels\, and any Personal Protective Equipment. We recommend wearing long pants\, comfortable footwear\, and applying bug spray. Remain tick and insect aware. \nRegistration required.

SUMMARY:Amphibians and Reptiles of Southern Maine
DESCRIPTION:Join the Scarborough Land Trust and the Amphibian and Reptile Trust International (amphibianreptile.org) in a field program to learn about the common\, and not so common\, species of amphibians and reptiles found in Southern Maine. We will look for several species found on SLT properties\, focusing on general characteristics and habitat requirements. We will also discuss conservation status\, natural history and the ethics around handling amphibians and reptiles. \nOur instructor is Greg LeClair. Greg is a PhD student at the University of Maine where he studies environmental DNA applications for endangered species. Greg has been working in the field of herpetology (the study of amphibians and reptiles) since 2014. Greg created and manages the Maine Big Night\, a community science project focused on monitoring and assisting road-crossing of amphibians throughout the State. \nPlease dress appropriately for the weather\, including footwear for muddy or wet conditions. Also recommended are hat\, water\, insect repellent and sunscreen. Hand sanitizer is also recommended if you handle any reptiles and amphibians.  \nRegistration is restricted to participants ages 5 and older.

DESCRIPTION:Under the guidance of our Stewardship Director\, learn how to identify and combat invasive species at Scarborough Land Trust properties and in your own backyard! Invasive species are organisms that are non-native to a particular area and cause harm to the environment where they are introduced. Every year the SLT stewardship committee and a team of dedicated volunteers work hard to manage and fight the spread of invasive species across properties. We need your help identifying these species and working to remove them before they spread. \nAfter learning about species and management\, we will work on removing some from an SLT preserve. All ages welcome\, although children must be accompanied by an adult. Be prepared to walk a short distance\, potentially off the maintained trail. We encourage stewardship volunteers to bring their own tools\, if they have them\, including gloves\, loppers\, trimmers\, shovels\, and any Personal Protective Equipment. We recommend wearing long pants\, comfortable footwear\, and applying bug spray. Remain tick and insect aware. Registration required.

SUMMARY:Native Plant Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join SLT and Wild Seed Project for an autumn plant walk at Pleasant Hill Preserve!\nWoodlands and meadows contain a variety of interesting native plants and have a story to tell about landscape history. In this native plant walk\, Heather will highlight the surprising diversity of species native to Maine\, including fall wildflowers\, ferns\, and a variety of native shrubs and trees. We will learn which species are adaptable to gardens and developed landscapes\, their edible and medicinal properties\, unusual reproductive strategies\, and the threats to their survival. Learning to recognize the native species in our midst is the first step toward advocating for their conservation. \n  \n \nHeather McCargo\, founder of The Wild Seed Project\, is an educator with 35 years of expertise in plant propagation\, landscape design\, and conservation. She was the head plant propagator at the New England Wildflower Society’s Garden in the Woods during the 1990s\, worked at several landscape architecture/planning firms specializing in ecological design\, and has been a contributor to several research projects with USAID\, the National Gardening Association\, and MOFGA. She has lectured nationally and is widely published in journals and magazines such as Horticulture and American Nurseryman. More locally\, Heather designed the master plan for the medicinal gardens at Avena Botanicals in Rockland and was the creator and lead teacher for the Bay School’s Agricultural Arts program. Heather has a B.A. in plant ecology from Hampshire College\, and an M.A. from the Conway School of Landscape Design. \n  \nNote SLT’s Liability and Photo Release Form  \nTickets are sold per person. SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Firefly Watch with Don Salvatore
DESCRIPTION:Image: Photinus firefly by Don Salvatore\nUnfortunately this program has been cancelled.\n\nWatching fireflies is a fun summer activity\, but it can also help scientists better understand these fascinating beetles! This program will feature an informative talk on fireflies as well as an introduction to citizen science. We will be participating in a citizen science project – observing and counting fireflies. This will be similar to the firefly program in early July\, with an added bonus. (Whether you attended that program or not\, you are welcome to join us!)\nDon Salvatore was a science educator at the Museum of Science in Boston for over 30 years and a curator of the Firefly Watch Citizen Science Project.\nWe will be walking in the dark\, so please bring a flashlight (preferably one with red light capabilities). The entire program takes place outside\, please bring appropriate clothing as well as insect repellent. Program suitable for all ages.\n\nPreregistration is required for this event. Those registering as a group are only required to register ONCE\, representing the party arriving in their vehicle. Registration capacity is limited by parking.\n*1 ticket equals 1 car*\n\nNote SLT’s Liability and Photo Release Form
