SUMMARY:Invasive Species Training
DESCRIPTION:Under the guidance of our Stewardship Director\, learn how to identify and combat invasive species at Scarborough Land Trust properties and in your own backyard! Invasive species are organisms that are non-native to a particular area and cause harm to the environment where they are introduced. Every year the SLT stewardship committee and a team of dedicated volunteers work hard to manage and fight the spread of invasive species across properties. We need your help identifying these species and working to remove them before they spread. \nAll ages welcome\, although children must be accompanied by an adult. Be prepared to walk a short distance\, potentially off the maintained trail. We encourage stewardship volunteers to bring their own tools\, if they have them\, including gloves\, loppers\, trimmers\, shovels\, and any Personal Protective Equipment. We recommend wearing long pants\, comfortable footwear\, and applying bug spray. Remain tick and insect aware. \nAll trainings will take place at Pleasant Hill Preserve. \nThere will be trainings every other Tuesday starting August 9 and ending September 20. \nTrail works days will also be scheduled on Saturdays this summer\, and location of those will change each month. After volunteers have been trained they are encouraged to be autonomous and schedule additional work days for themselves and other volunteers. \nThere is no need to register but we ask that all participants fill out the Liability and Photo Release Form and Volunteer Form at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScPFXO-twK88yEnwbO7IJ59W3LBfepg9GUW6ofrDwAcBNWAXA/viewform \nQuestions?\nContact Sami at swolf@scarboroughlandtrust.org

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Firefly Watch with Don Salvatore
DESCRIPTION:Image: Photinus firefly by Don Salvatore\nUnfortunately this program has been cancelled.\n\nWatching fireflies is a fun summer activity\, but it can also help scientists better understand these fascinating beetles! This program will feature an informative talk on fireflies as well as an introduction to citizen science. We will be participating in a citizen science project – observing and counting fireflies. This will be similar to the firefly program in early July\, with an added bonus. (Whether you attended that program or not\, you are welcome to join us!)\nDon Salvatore was a science educator at the Museum of Science in Boston for over 30 years and a curator of the Firefly Watch Citizen Science Project.\nWe will be walking in the dark\, so please bring a flashlight (preferably one with red light capabilities). The entire program takes place outside\, please bring appropriate clothing as well as insect repellent. Program suitable for all ages.\n\nPreregistration is required for this event. Those registering as a group are only required to register ONCE\, representing the party arriving in their vehicle. Registration capacity is limited by parking.\n*1 ticket equals 1 car*\n\nNote SLT’s Liability and Photo Release Form

SUMMARY:Story Time at the Survivor Elm
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Scarborough Public Library\, free 10:00am story time will feature books about trees! Join Kelly under the Survivor Elm at the Scarborough Land Trust Pleasant Hill Preserve. The Elm is located in the field on the right hand side of the parking lot and can be reached with a minimal\, easy walk to the mowed grass just past the kiosk. Please bring a blanket to sit on and be prepared for mosquitoes and ticks. At the conclusion of story time (10:30) join Kelly and her kids on a hike to explore the property. An ADA accessible trail will lead us towards the barn on the property for a mini nature lesson. Families wanting to explore onto the trails can continue on with Kelly or return on the same trail back to the parking lot.
