Scarborough Land Trust’s policy is to allow dogs on leash at all of our preserves and properties. At Fuller Farm, dogs may be off-leash, except in the fields. Several SLT properties provide habitat for deer to shelter from the heavy snow, harsh winds and cold temperatures during the winter. It is crucial to their survival that they conserve energy while they wait for warmer weather. Please keep this in mind if you bring your pets with you for a winter hike, snowshoe or ski. A wild romp is fun for your dog and gives the owner pleasure to watch, but if your dog chases deer, the energy expenditure could mean the difference between life and death for the deer. If you see deer tracks in the snow, please adhere to the leash policy, and help us spread the word about this to other dog owners when you are out on the trail.
A little more information on deer wintering areas can be found here. A more in-depth description is available from the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife here.
Feel free to contact Rich Bard, SLT’s Executive Director by email or (207) 289-1199 if you have any questions about this policy.
