Follow a Raindrop and Explore Living Water in Scarborough
Scarborough Land Trust and Friends of Scarborough Marsh are celebrating WATER!
SLT will be hosting a summer series for families and children in collaboration with FOSM. Each week will take a close look at water and its important role in the environment. Each session will be 2 hours long, starting at 3 PM and concluding at 5 PM.
Session 1 – Freshwater (Wednesday, August 10)
We will begin the series with a trip to Broadturn Farm where participants can explore streams with dip nets and magnifying glasses. Here we will look for macroinvertebrates, check out the clay stream sediment, and turn over rocks to see salamanders.
Session 2 – Marshlands (Wednesday, August 17)
In this session, we will explore the marshlands of Scarborough at SLT’s Blue Point Preserve. Why are marshes so smelly? How do the tides affect marshlands? We will learn about the biology and chemistry of saltmarshes. Wetlands are so important to animals- especially birds. Bring binoculars! We could see lots of egrets, blackbirds, and many other marsh birds.
Session 3 – Ocean (Wednesday, August 24)
The last stop will be the ocean. The beach is a great place to witness the power of water. Watching the waves, understanding the tides, collecting seashells are all fun ways to explore and appreciate salt water systems. We will search through intertidal pools and discover beach critters. Learn about “Leave no trace” policies and understand what shouldn’t be taken away from the beaches.
Location update: This program will take place at Ferry Beach
Parking: Ferry Beach is a town operated beach so those with a beach pass will not need to pay. For others, SLT & FOSM will cover parking cost.
