Description
Description: An attractive native tree, often with a pyramidal shape, over time maturing into a rounded shape. The leaves turn a brilliant yellow in the fall. The inner bark gives off a wintergreen scent.
Height: Up to 60 to 70 feet
Light Requirement: Sun to partial shade
Soil Requirement: Moist, acidic, sandy, or rocky soils
Wildlife Benefit: The tree is the larval host plant for the Mourning Cloak butterfly, Dreamy Duskywing, and Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. In addition, several moths use the tree as a larval host plant. Pollinators are attracted to the flowers and wildlife will eat the seeds.
