Description
Description: One of the first ferns to grow in the spring. The broad fronds of this fern are “interrupted” in the middle by spore-bearing leaflets that grow between the leaf blades. They wither away throughout the season, leaving the gaps that gave this fern its name.
Height: 2 to 4 feet high.
Light Requirement: Partial to full shade.
Soil Requirement: Moist, average to humus-rich, acidic soil.
Wildlife Benefit: Fern bunches provide food for native caterpillars and habitat cover for ground-nesting birds and small mammals.
